In order to fill its quotas in students’ enrolment into the Sokoto State University and other Universities across the Country as well as address the continuous decline in the number and the quality of students from the state, who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Sokoto State Government established the School of Developmental Studies in the year, 2011, with provisions of prerequisite laboratories, classrooms, qualified lecturers and other facilities for serious study and commenced operation since in January, 2012 at its permanent site (off Polytechnic road) with the following objectives.
For the set objectives to be achieved, the School has been running only Basic Matriculation Programme (BMP) in Science, Social Science and Arts from 2012 to 2016. During these four Academic Sessions the school has graduated the following students with at least 75% success rate.

Consequently, the state Government with its determination to uplift the standard of education in the state under the able leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Mutawallen Sokoto) vide implementation of resolution of the policy council on the state of emergency on education (EXCO/53/VOL.VIPC/P.4) restructured the School as an autonomous entity to serve as the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies with the following components of studies:
